Abstract

A surprisingly big number of Strategies, Initiatives and Action Plans of the European Union have objectives that are related to changing the real estate and construction sector toward a resource-efficient and sustainable development. They aim at policy instruments that would support setting requirements, technology development and uptake, voluntary agreements and labeling as well as investment in research and development in line with the strategic objectives. This paper is an overview of close to sixty European Documents that are of importance for the sustainable construction as well as the most essential Directives. The efforts towards common and open procedures of the environmental life cycle assessment and life cycle costing are summarized. A brief overview of the R&D funding is also given.
