Abstract

When deformation of paper occurs under stress, partial bonding fractures usually appear, which gradually increase in area and severity. The strength of fibre bonding is affected by both chemical and structural factors. Measurement of bonding strength is vitiated by the unequal distribution of stress between bonding areas, individual fibres and sections of the paper. It is therefore impossible to give an absolute value for bonding strength. This can only be determined in relation to a given structure and specific stress.
