FinnFusion Yearbook 2025

Research output: Book/ReportReport

Abstract

This Yearbook summarises the 2025 research and industry activities of the FinnFusion Consortium. The present emphasis of the FinnFusion programme is the following:

i.Technology R&D for ITER construction and systems including industry contracts;
ii.Implementation of the Fusion Roadmap to the Realization of Fusion Energy as a member of the EUROfusion Consortium;
iii.Creating concepts for the next generation fusion power plant DEMO in Europe.

The members of FinnFusion are VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd., Aalto University, Comatec Ltd., Coresbond Ltd., CSC - IT Center for Science Ltd., Fortum Power and Heat Ltd., Fulvisol Ltd., Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology, Luvata Ltd., Operview Ltd., Platom Ltd., Tampere University, University of Helsinki and bo Akademi.

FinnFusion participates in several EUROfusion work packages, the largest being remote maintenance, advanced computing, materials research, plasma-facing components and experimental campaigns at ASDEX Upgrade and related analyses also at JET. F4E projects in 2025 focused on the development and validation of water hydraulics and control system for the Divertor Assembly Transporter.

EUROfusion supports post-graduate training through the Education work package that allowed FinnFusion to partly fund 35 PhD students in FinnFusion member organizations. In addition, one EUROfusion Researcher and Engineering Grant was running in 2025.

The 5th Nordic Biannual Fusion Seminar was held in Troms, Norway for the first time in June, hosted by UiT the Arctic University of Norway. Keynote speakers represented ITER, EUROfusion, DIFFER, and Commonwealth Fusion Systems. Bringing the seminar to Norway provided a timely opportunity to highlight the country’s recent membership in EUROfusion through DTU as its international partner. More than 80 scientists and engineers attended to discuss Nordic collaboration across a range of fusion-related topics.
