Abstract

The International Symposium on Frost in Geotechnical Engineering, organised as a part of the task defined for the ISSMFE Technical Cornmittee on Frost, TC-8, was held on March 13 to 15, 1989 at the Riekonlinna Hotel in Saariselkä, Finland. The two volumes of this proceedings contain the work report of the ISSMFE Technical Committee on Frost during 1985-1989 and 62 refereed papers on the following four topics chosen for the conference sessions: - Thermal and physical aspects in the freezing and thawing of soils. -Frost-susceptibility and the frost heave of soils. -Damage to structures due to frost action in soils. -Preventative measures against frost action in soils.Further three special lectures were given on the topics: - Mechanics of freezing and thawing in soils. -Frost heave properties of soils. -Frost protection in design and construction. The members of the Finnish National Committee on Frost have served as referees of the papers.
