Abstract

After discussing the molecular aspects of the coordination of olefins to metals as well as the fundamentals of alkene coordination homo- and co-polymerization, the chapter gives a thorough overview of the metal-catalyzed (i) alternating and non-alternating copolymerization of alkenes and carbon monoxide; (ii) copolymerization of alkenes and polar vinyl monomers; and (iii) copolymerization of polar vinyl monomers and carbon monoxide. The synthesis of telechelic and end-capped polyolefins as well as the use of chemoinformatics for a more rapid development of the field are then discussed. Finally, an outlook on the coordination copolymerization of vinyl monomers is given.
