    Abstract

Different approaches may be used in order to estimate road friction. This paper describes the estimation approach developed in the FRICTION project, based on the fusion of data coming from different clusters of sensors, namely vehicle dynamics sensors and environmental sensors. First, the vehicle dynamics approach and the environmental sensing approach are described separately, providing information about the basic principles and some experimental results. Finally, an overview on the fusion and decision strategies for vehicle and environmental measurements is provided.
