Abstract
Futures studies is a relatively young multi- and interdisciplinary field. This entry provides a short history of the discipline before proceeding to identify and discuss three ethically relevant key tensions within the field. Those discussed include the role of the researcher (analyst/facilitator), the view of the future (open/determined), and the goal of the field (to describe/to influence). The key features of these tensions are explicated, and their ethical relevance analysed. The entry concludes with some cautious predictions concerning the future trends of futures research including a possibly emerging shift from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism.
