Abstract

This chapter presents the wide-band code-division multiple access (WCDMA) radio resource functions for the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS). A detailed description of the radio resource functions of the European Telecommunications Standardisation Institute (ETSI) WCDMA is given including power control, random access, initial cell search, and handover procedures. The WCDMA system was selected as an example system for fuzzy reasoning illustrations in cellular systems mainly because of its important role as a third generation cellular system.
