Abstract

Narrow gap welding techniques have been developed to diminish welding work and to meet the requirements of high fracture toughness in heavy plate structures. Welding in narrow grooves has been found sensitive to weld defects. It requires strict procedural tolerances which calls for new thinking in the workshop. Different variants of gas metal arc welding using narrow grooves, such as rotating the arc, oscillating the arc and pointing the arc into the corners of the groove, are presented. Each variant includes several different solutions depending on the supplier. A fairly detailed description is given on the most reliable variants. A short comprasion is also made with other narrow gap welding methods and other welding processes for thick plates.
