Research output: Book/ReportReport

Abstract

The aim of this report was to survey the international and national methods used in the risk assessment of genetically modified organisms, as well as the data considered necessary for adequate risk assessment. The information included in this report was collected during the period July 1, 1998 to February 28, 1999 from material available from several authorities and organisations. The material is focused on the risk assessment of genetically modified plants and novel foods. Though not being comprehensive, the material shows that the data required for risk assessment is largely consistent within the different guidelines provided by the authorities. However, no common methodology for risk assessment or, rather, the description of the hazard identification and quantification methods, was found in the collected material. Differences in the logic, values and decision making may partially explain the regional differences in the marketing approvals of genetically modified plants.
