Abstract
Industrial process control is experiencing a significant transformation. This transformation is characterized by advancements in technology, including intelligent technologies and the industrial metaverse, as well as societal expectations such as sustainability and human-centric approaches. A successful transformation requires research and development activities, the management of which can be greatly facilitated by a holistic research agenda, which connects practical realities with research questions and contextual factors. This chapter presents a framework and methodology for developing and managing a human-centric, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research agenda focused on the transformation of industrial process control driven by intelligent technology and the industrial metaverse. It further illustrates how a robust and comprehensive interaction between specific research activities and the overarching agenda can be effectively established. Several empirical findings from case studies related to intelligent technologies in process control, AI assistants, and the industrial metaverse are described.
