Abstract

The full-scale ice loads acting on the propeller and propulsion shafting of a small car ferry with single shaftline were measured during the winter period 1986-87. The propeller was an open CP with a diameter of 2m. The blade was instrumented with strain gauges so the location and magnitude of the concentrated ice load component in the weakest direction of the blade could be derived from the measured responses. The bending moment, thrust and torque of the screw shaft were also measured. All these were registered as a function of the ship's speed, the propeller speed and pitch. New, in this project, was the data collection system and the duration of the measurement. The analog signals were digitised immediately on-board the ship, and the most interesting samples were stored into the CPU of Micro VAX II computer and later recorded on magnetic tape. The level and peak distributions of the measured signals were also recorded. The measuring system was automatic and unmanned, and was operating for three months.
