Abstract
VTT has been involved in peat research since 1981.
Between 1981 and 1987, the major target was to solve the
main problems in peat production. During 1988-1992 VTT
co-ordinated the national OPTIMITURVE research programme,
aimed at doubling the peat yield per hectare. Throughout
the years 1993-1998, peat research is being done within
the national BIOENERGY programme, the target being to
decrease production costs. In addition to public research
programme, VTT Energy is participating in R&D work in
co-operation with peat producers and machine
manufacturers, for example, Vapo, Turveruukki and
Suokone.
