    Abstract

The high reliability of an industrial plant, machine and equipment is often comprehended as a synonym for smooth-running and safe operation. For the user, high reliability means the uninterrupted flow of production, minimised maintenance costs, lower personal and environmental risks and energy saving. This is why the users are very often eager to pay for advanced reliability. This paper describes an approach developed for improving the availability performance of production systems. The approach is widely applicable for different kinds of production systems. Experiences obtained when utilising the approach in dairies are discussed.
