Abstract

We have integrated numerically the dc-SQUID equations in a wide range of parameters. Instabilities in the coherent phase evolution of the junction s are found also in the absence of an external field and sometimes near parameter values allegedly used in magnetometers, for which they then have nontrivial consequences. The instabilities can be accounted for as arising from the Mathieu-Hill nature of the phase difference equation. At a number of unphysically high inductances we find chaotic motion of the phases.
