Abstract

This paper illustrates an organizational perspective on cyber-physical systems (CPS) modelling for the factory of the future (FoF). In particular, it addresses challenges that are not of a technical nature but stem from the inter-organizational cooperation between multiple actors that are needed in augmenting physical assets with digital technologies. From the organizational modelling perspective, CPS represents a complex value proposition that cannot be realized without the participation and contribution of multiple, often loosely coupled actors. Thus, CPS exemplifies an organizational 'ecosystem' and draws attention to business issues in ecosystem modelling such as activities, value creation/capture, and risks. The paper conceptually illustrates challenges that may arise from the inter-organizational collaboration, presents a conceptual framework to take them into account when developing and modelling the business ecosystem, and concludes by discussing the role of inter-organizational aspects in relation to cyber-physical systems and the transition to the FoF.
