Abstract

In this paper the task of designing a newspaper is discussed from the point of view of building a knowledge-based system. The characteristic features of the knowledge required in newspaper design are presented and the design goals together with the problem solving methods are described. The design process can frequently be seen as a task in which the aim is to fulfill the design goals using predefined problem solving methods and taking into account constraints which are specific to the problem. In newspaper design and pagination the constraints are imposed by the structure of the product i.e. the newspaper itself, the material (both editorial and ads) to be placed on the newspaper pages, the production equipment, and the actual production process.
