Abstract

Food contact materials comprise a very broad and complex area. In order to collect knowledge and be able to provide better guidelines for food administrations, food inspections, industry, and others, the Nordic Committee of Senior Officials (EK-Livs) under the Nordic Council of Ministers, has funded several projects in this area over the years. As a continuation of this work, a plan for a seminar on lacquers in cans was formulated and accepted in 1996. The findings of migrants like BADGE have made this item highly relevant. The main goal was to come up with recommendations for the safe use of lacquers as surface coatings as inner layers in cans. The project group elaborated the seminar programme including presentations on techno-logy, legislation, analytical testing, and toxicological aspects. Speakers were invited to contribute with their knowledge on different items and to participate in discussions as a contribution to the seminar. Furthermore, the participants formulated advice and guidance on specific questions according to the safety aspects and in-house control in the food packaging industry, in food production and packaging.
