LCA supports sustainable material development

Abstract

The progressive substitution of fossil-based consumer plastics products with bioplastics is crucial to decarbonise our society. European Union funded Horizon-project ViSS aims to create a safe, sustainable, fully functional and highly replicable circular value chain of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) bioplastic with higher comonomer content specifically for high performance food packaging, utilizing food industrial residues as carbon and nutrient sources for PHBV production.
The technology development of ViSS follows Safe and Sustainable by Design framework (SSbD) established by European Commission (Caldeira et al. 2022). In ViSS project, the environmental sustainability of PHBV production has now been assessed twice by life cycle assessment (LCA); first at the lab scale production and then at demo scale production. The results of LCA are used to improve the sustainability of the innovation by basing re-design proposals on them.
This poster presentation will detail the methodology, results, and findings of the LCA iterations conducted in ViSS following the SSbD framework. This poster will also cover, how LCA can be integrated into sustainable material development and design process.
