Abstract
Agile software development (e.g. Scrum and Extreme Programming) and Lean Software Development as development approaches both emphasize effective communication which is often a bottleneck particularly in distributed development. Improving communication in agile software development mainly focuses on general level recommendations, such as the use of different communication tools and practices. In order to provide companies with a more detailed tool for improving communication, this study discusses using waste (a central element in Lean Software Development) identification as a means for identifying the bottlenecks in communication. The study provides a concrete approach for companies in order for them to improve communication in their distributed development efforts.
