Abstract
Lighting of roads has been a significant issue in terms of safety concerns for both drivers and pedestrians, and economic reasons related to energy efficiency demands. Numerous studies have provided recommendations to illuminate roads and to classify proper lighting for motorised traffic. After the recent establishment of CIE mesopic photometry, the implementation of mesopic photometry in road lighting design and measurements is being discussed among the international lighting society. This paper summarises these studies and makes a critical review on the current recommendations.
