    Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss how to verify the performance and effects of a variable speed limit system designed for alleviating merging from a minor road to a major road at a yield sign controlled three-arm junction. The results based on a case study showed that the hypothesis of the clear positive effect of the control system on merging from the minor road was not verified. However, the main conclusion was that the control system might have a positive, however very small, effect.
