    Abstract

Nowadays, advanced ANC systems have been developed and implemented. It is difficult, however, to compare them or conclude ones quality objectively because there are not any consistent method to measure the performance of an ANC system. It is possible to measure the efficiency of ANC systems with conventional methods (ISO standard) but there are certain aspects in active noise control, which make those methods deficient or even incorrect. For instance, in active noise control, the attenuation depends on the SPL and there is a limit for the attenuation ability of the active control system. The non-linearity of the active systems is often neglected when different systems or methods are compared. In the current measurement reports and articles concerning ANC systems, the results can be reported subjectively or insufficiently. Therefore, a method for objective comparison between different ANC systems is needed. The preliminary testing method for ANC systems is specified so that different systems can be compared. The preliminary testing method is evaluated with an experimental control system. The parameters that should be given with the measurement results are determined. After the public discussion and adoption of the results, the rating of ANC systems will become easier and will be based on appropriate basis.
