Abstract
Crack opening displacement (COD) on a deep double notched tension specimen was quantitatively analyzed and showed a linear relationship between COD and the distance from the crack tip all through the testing period. Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) can be determined by using the relationship. The crack opening test also gives the onset of crack propagation through the analysis of the relationship between COD and the displacement. Eventually, a method to measure CTODc, CTOD at the onset of crack propagation, is proposed to observe the crack tip on a dot-printed specimen by means of CCD camera.
CTODc seems to increase with an increase of ligament length (L) at the short L, and become constant roughly in the range of L ≥ 9 mm for the specimen. CTODc at long L may be used as a measure of the fracture toughness of paper.
