abstract = "The objective of the research is to improve the combustion technical properties of by-products formed in mechanical forest industry by developing the fuel storage and processing. The research is divided into three subprojects: 1) the optimisation of the storage of bark, 2) reduction of the moisture content of the bark, and 3) removal of harmful substances from the fuel. Behaviour of spruce and pine bark in the storage was studied during a period of three months in the first storage researches. Main results of the storage researches were that the barks tested dried 6,5-10,5% during the storage period and no significant changes were observed in the calorific value of the dry matter. Reduction of the moisture content increased the effective calorific value by 8,0-14% compared to the initial value. Apparently a significant part of the increase of the calorific value was lost due to the SD-losses during the storage. Unfortunately the precise value of DS-losses could not be measured during the tests.",
