Method for improvement of the quality of video compression, in which a PAL video signal consists of a luminance signal Y and a chrominance signal C, where the amplitude of C is Usinωt+Vcosωt. The method involves the phases: - calculation of the mean value from four consecutive images of a PAL series, cycle, in relation to Y, U and V, - equalising of the horizontal chrominance by using a low- pass filter to reduce the noise of the chrominance line, at a frequency which is higher than the upper limit of the bandwidth f subscript o, - equalising of the vertical chrominance with a low-pass filter, by selecting as the cut-off frequency fp of the pass band the first zero position of C in order to reduce the side lobes, - improvement of the horizontal chrominance resolution by more precise use of the luminance information, - increasing of the saturation by conversion of RGB to HLS and back, and - compensation of the gamma-correction caused by the camera tape recorder.
