Abstract

There is a huge production potential for forest chips in seedling stands and firstthinning sites. Due to high production costs, the production of these so-called small-wood chips is insignificant for the time being. The aim of this research work is to reduce production costs of small-wood chips by studying and developing, i.a., the production of small-wood chips in co-operation with forest owners and forestry associations, and the quality improvement of small-wood chips by drying. The work is divided into four sub-projects, which will be carried out in co-operation with the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), different departments of the Finnish Forest Research Institute, the University of Oulu, and producers of small-wood chips.
