    Abstract

We have developed a microneedle based sample collecting system that is capable of extracting lipid samples from an artificial lipid layer on a microscope slide. Such a system can be used in the future to collect lipid samples from real tissue sections and help surgeons in their decision making during surgical operations. The sample collection system consists of a silicon based multiport microneedle integrated with polymer microfluidics. A special micromanipulator system is developed to control the positioning of the needle and the sampling event. Mass spectrometry analysis is used to show that the lipid extraction from a standard lipid sample can be successfully done.
