MIKKO Handbook: Comprehensive collection and utilisation of software measurement data

Abstract

The significance of software in embedded product development has increased dramatically as products have evolved. The constant need to improve product quality and increase product features has made software more complex, and also, a critical part of a product. To reduce lead-time and improve the quality of software, industry needs to pay attention more than ever in software process improvement methods and the systematic adoption of best practices throughout organisations. In order to be successful, product development requires measured information and feedback of the quality and functionality of software already during the software development process. Therefore, metrics definition, measurement data collection, analysis, and utilisation within a company will form a basis for effective product and software development. The MIKKO handbook supports software producing organisations to establish and use software measurement efficiently. The handbook describes a comprehensive and tailorable measurement framework for the industrial software process, providing and suggesting processes and methods from metrics definition to the full utilisation of measurement data. The MIKKO framework includes: - processes to define, collect, analyse and utilise metrics, - methods associated with the process, and - guidelines to establish tool support for the measurement program. The MIKKO handbook supports an organisation's entire measurement program and is applicable for companies just starting to use software measurements as well as for companies that need to improve their software measurement practices.
