Abstract
This paper has its focus on the motivations and travelling styles of
people who use mainly other means of transport than cars and motorcycles. The
results present an overview on the variety of different reasons for walking,
cycling or using public transport. The analysis is based on the data collected
in face-to-face interviews in 19 European countries participating in SARTRE4
project. Further analyses were carried out based on socio-demographic
variables and the context of living area. The younger the respondents, the
more often they were motivated by financial and environmental reasons, whereas
the older respondents were more often motivated by health and physical
exercise. Men tended to choose financial reasons more often than women,
whereas women were more often motivated by e.g. environmental reasons or fear
of driving. Cluster analysis resulted in five types of road users that could
be found in each country: 1. ‘public transport user’, 2. ‘pedestrian’, 3.
‘cyclist’, 4. ‘pedestrian + public transport user’ and 5. ‘active traveller’.
