Abstract
A method utilizing multidimensional gas chromatography (GC/GC) with low resolution mass selective detection was developed for the determination of coplanar PCB congeners in biological and environmental samples. The potential of MS with chemical ionization and selected negative ion monitoring as the detection technique in connection with GC/GC was tested. Because the entire separation of the coplanar congeners from other PCBs is performed in the GC/GC/NCIMS instrument the method allows the sample pretreatment to be highly simplified. The sensitivity of the method is at the low ppt level.
