Abstract

Thick section austenitic stainless steel, AISI 316 LN, has been welded by using an 3 kW Nd:YAG - laser with filler wire. A butt joint and narrow gap V groove were used in all cases. Multi-pass welding procedure were used, for example in the case of thickness of 28 mm, 5 passes. Filler wire parameters, as well as groove structure, were varied in order to define effective welding process.

High quality welds could be made by using Nd:YAG laser welding with filler wire addition, although some pore formation were noticed in some welds. Shape of crossection of the welds conformed mainly the configuration of the groove. As a consequence of arised heat input according to the V groove, some distortions of the welded plates were noticed.
