    Abstract

The paper describes development and application of techniques for snow cover monitoring in the boreal forest zone during snow melt using C-band polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data. A time series of 10 quadpolarimetric RadarSat-2 images acquired during snow melting season in Finland were used in the study. A change detection approach was applied for wet snow mapping using different combinations of multipolarization data. Results are compared to those obtained from optical sensors, as well as to snow map estimates obtained using the TKK snow-covered area mapping method. Also the dynamics of change of polarimetric observables is analyzed using popular polarimetric SAR decomposition approaches in order to identify important and potentially hazardous events such as e.g. flooding
