Abstract
This thesis has been written as a part of OAN (Optical
Access Networking)
project. The OAN project concentrates on developing an
optical feeder
network to connect different subscriber networks to the
core network
utilizing the Data over SONET (DoS) concept.
In the growing networks, the need of automated network
monitoring has been
perceived. This thesis examines the monitoring of the OAN
network using
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). A network
monitoring system for
the OAN network is planned and also partly implemented in
the OAN test
network. Furthermore, the feasibilities and limitations
of the SNMP are
discussed.
An extendable share-ware network management tool,
Net-SNMP, is used in the
OAN project. Also, standardized Management Information
Bases (MIBs) are
utilized as much as possible by the planned network
monitoring system.
However, in addition to standardized MIBs, new
OAN-specific MIBs are
needed. Furthermore, the network management software
needs to be extended
to support the necessary MIBs. Extending of the Net-SNMP
software to
support an OAN node-card specific MIB is also described.
