Abstract
The EU Emission Trading System started in the beginning of 2005. This system will bring new challenges, but also new opportunities for the energy market in the countries of the Baltic Sea Region. Typically, in some EU countries the decreasing of greenhouse gas emissions tends to be more expensive to achieve than in the others. This brings about new trade schemes that could be implemented in the BSR. One important way of reducing emissions ie to replace fossil fuels with biomass in energy production. The aim is to describe and evaluate different business concepts for the BSR countries in the area of bioenergy utilization. The purpose is to present win-win opportunitiesm, in which both the exporting and importing countries/regions will get profit from the system. These positive impacts may be quite impressive in regional level, as they directly boost several business areas like fuel production and transport, equipment manufacturing and maintenance, plant construction, as well as energy production and use. In addition, the impacts cover also forestry and agriculture, by bringing new value and utilization options for their by-products. The paper is based on the early findings of the ongoing project "New Bioenergy Concepts during Emission Trading in the Baltic Sea Region (ET-BIOENERGY)", which is co-financed by the EU Programme BSR INTERREG III B NP.
