Abstract

The performance concept served as the guiding principle of the Nordic project on recoating of facades. The performance requirements, the agents acting on the coated surface from both sides - the outside and from behind the coating - were taken into account. The complicated process of evaluating the problem in order to arrive at the correct solution was analyzed. The substrate materials reviewed were wood, concrete, renderings and masonry and, to a lesser degree, coil coated steel and aluminium. The main emphasis was on the treatment of the substrate/coating combination. Moisture was dealt with as the most important agent affecting the coated facade. The condition assessment and the surface preparation of the facade before the first coating and the recoating were especially stressed. There is a need of scientific studies of the coating problems with an emphasis on the behaviour of the coating/substrate combination.
