Abstract
The workshop is the second in a series of four workshops
for the FAIR Demonstration project entitled Demonstration
of the Nutritional Functionality of Probiotic Foods,
Probdemo, FAIR CT96-1028. The aim is to substantiate the
real value of probiotic products to the EU markets and to
EU consumers by providing a sound basis for assessing the
functionality of novel probiotic foods. The project
enables the industry to demonstrate the health claims for
probiotic products on children and adults with regard to
management of intestinal disorders and immune
enhancement.
The workshops and newsletters and other publications are
considered to be of utmost importance for the
dissemination of project results since the main purpose
of the programme is demonstration. The dissemination will
thus be established by annual workshops and newsletters.
Workshop 1 was held on the Selection and Safety Criteria
of Probiotics in Helsinki, Finland November 1996.
Workshop 2 is being held in Cork, Ireland October 1997
entitled Novel Methods for Probiotic Research. Workshop 3
will be held in Haikko, Finland October 1998. The aim of
workshop 3 is to have a joint programme with other EU
project groups involved with functional foods. Newsletter
1 and 2 has been established, the first one being on the
Probdemo group and its objectives, the second one being
on the Safety of probiotics.
