    Abstract

Advanced telecommunications technologies and rapid transport facilities have led to major markets becoming global, rather than domestic or regional. Future manufacturing companies will operate in the global environment supplying customers with products of guaranteed minimal lead time and top quality, from different sources in various parts of the world. Continuously evolving customer needs require ever-improving performance from companies, for them to be able to utilize the available market opportunities. High-volume standardized production giving way to flexible manufacturing systems, with more at a lower cost, but with top quality and vanishing lead times. Enterprise and interenterprise integration is imperative for the rapid improvement of products and processes.
