    Abstract

The design and construction of an optical voltage sensor (OVS) for distributed voltage measurements on medium-voltage (MV) networks (11 kV) is presented in this paper. The sensor prototype, comprising a piezoelectric transducer and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) as a basic optical strain sensing element, is evaluated through laboratory testing and its performance is assessed based on the accuracy requirements specified by the relevant industry standards. It is demonstrated that the device has the potential to meet the requirements for the 3P protection and 0,2 metering classes specified by the IEC 60044-7 standard.
