Abstract

Strong coolant flow oscillations of single-phase natural circulation flow were found when overcooling transients of the Loviisa Unit 1 reactor pressure vessel were analyzed with the system codes RELAP5/MOD2 and SMABRE. The oscillations were explained qualitatively as a result of using a one-dimensional node model, but another explanation may also be the numerics of the code. In order to demonstrate the effect of the loop geometry, an experimental program was carried out with the REWET-III facility simulating the primary circuit of the Loviisa VVER-440 reactor. Similar oscillations were found in the experiments as in the calculations, but the results show that the oscillating flow presupposes certain conditions.
