    Abstract

    This invited presentation summarised VTT's past, present, and future activities in the field of silicon waveguide technology. In particular, the following subjects were discussed: Basic waveguide processing, advanced multi-step waveguide processing, tight waveguide bends, waveguide mirrors, vertical tapers, rib-strip waveguide conversions, vertical couplers, multi-mode interference couplers, adiabatic couplers, thermo-optic switches and switch matrices, wavelength multiplexers with integrated variable optical attenuators, fiber-waveguide coupling, and laser-waveguide coupling.
