Abstract
A brief discussion of reasons why applications of satellite-based systems have not spread as fast as was predicted in the 1970s. Limitations of satellite data are explored in relation to early methodology, digital vs. analog data, remote and managed forests, data processing technology and distribution, and organization of research.
