    Abstract

Establishing accurately the behaviour of metallic components in their service environment is an important need for much of manufacturing industry. In fields such as high‐temperature processing, nuclear and marine engineering it is crucial to long‐term safety and to plant economics. A Finnish research team has developed some novel means for determining the corrosion mechanisms, occurring in a wide variety of working environments, enabling patterns of behaviour to be identified and analysed.
