Abstract
After several years of digitalization trend, machine manufacturers have developed sustainability within their operations. The need for the changes is coming from the customers, sustainability certificates and legislation. Big customers that already have certificates have also started to ask about CO2 emission figures and other metrics from the manufacturers. The business model transition requires product and process innovations. The sustainability comes from the operations or products that are becoming more sustainable. The Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) and technical availability matters mostly for customers. Lower energy consumption and longer lifetime of the machines are examples how OEE is ensured with sustainable product innovations. Optimized maintenance schedule based on operational data is one practical example of sustainable process innovations, leading to environmental and economic impact. This paper is based on multiple case study developing product and process innovations leading to sustainable business models in manufacturing industries.
