Abstract

The number of embedded systems used in all kind of appliances has recently been growing and this tendency continues. In addition, the development of the performance level of the embedded hardware has evolved rapidly, thus more intelligence and diverse software has been established. As a next step of development of the embedded systems, an efficient way of communication should be integrated to the systems. A efficient way to communicate would made possible to implement a new kind of services as embedded. The current level of embedded systems makes that step possible but there do not exist any powerful generic solution. Technical Research Centre of Finland has been researching the communication of embedded devices and developing an embedded communication platform. The research is based on the widely used CVOPS protocol environment and on embedded Linux. The goal is to produce and embedded protocol platform. This thesis presents requirements for embedded system, as well as design and prototyping of the embedded protocol platform. The prototyping of the protocol specific embedded system is performed by using CVOPS and embedded Linux on embedded hardware.
