abstract = "The project includes three independent studies. They produce data and information on the environmental burdens and impacts of the total fuel production chain from forest to energy. One study emphasizes the impact on the abatement of greenhouse gas emissions when using different production techniques and calculate the impact on carbon balances in the forest soil when utilising logging residue. The other study carries out the emission measurements and the material balance calculations with the fuel analysis in the selected power plants. And the third study makes a comprehensive assessment of the environmental burdens and impacts of the wood energy production chain using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. The studies complement each others. The selected cases are two Finnish combined heat and power plants and their logging residue chains. The five different methods are studied for the production of the logging residue. Life cycle assessment of the system provides credible and transparent data for decision-making processes, and supports the environmental communication directed to various stakeholders. The results of the project support the mitigation implementation of the Kyoto agreement at the national and company levels.",
