Abstract

This project concerns greenhouse gas emissions coming from wood fuel production chains and the role of wood fuels in the control of greenhouse gas emissions in Finland. The direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions resulting from five different fuel production chains of wood chips were modeled in the first part of the study (1999-2000): terrain chipping, roadside chipping, terminal chipping, chipping of loose residues at the end use facility and chipping of baled residues at the end use facility. Some calculations for carbon balances in the forest soil were also made. In this second study the calculation models were completed with production chain of manual thinning and of wood pellets. Regional as well as economical aspects were considered from a point of view of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Calculations concerning the use of wood fuels on a national level in Finland when reducing greenhouse gas emissions were also made.
