N2 - The Finnish Wood Energy Technology Programme of Tekes, National
Technology Agency, focuses on developing technology for the production of
forest chips from logging residues and small-sized trees. It is one of the
tools of the Ministry of Trade and Industry for substituting renewable sources
of energy for fossil fuels in accordance with the Finnish energy and climate
strategies. It is aimed to reduce the cost and improve the quality of forest
chips. Quality control of wood and bark residues from the forest industries
is also included. In July 2002, the Programme consisted of 35 research
projects, 35 industrial development projects and 15 industrial demonstration
projects. The Programme also participates in international co-operation such
as the ALTENER Bioenergy Network-EUBIONET, OPET network (Organization
Promoting for Energy Technologies) of EU, and Task 31 (Conventional Forestry
Systems for Sustainable Production of Bioenergy) of the IEA Bioenergy
Agreement. More information about the Programme in English, approved
projects, progress and results is published in magazines, journals, seminar
proceedings, this yearbook of the Programme and in the website of Tekes
(www.tekes.fi/english/programm/ woodenergy).
