Abstract
Tekes, the National Technology Agency in Finland,
established in 1999 the Wood Energy Technology Programme
to develop efficient technology for large-scale
production of forest chips from residual forest biomass
such as small-sized trees from early thinnings and
logging residues and stump and root wood from final
fellings. The five-year programme was completed in spring
2004.
The programme was coordinated by VTT Processes. It was
composed of 46 industrial or product development
projects, 44 research projects, and 28 demonstration
projects. The total expenditure was about 42 M .
The programme, although it was basically national,
participated in international cooperation within
organisations such as ALTENER Bioenergy Network
- EUBIONET, OPET (Organisations for the Promotion of
Energy Technologies) of EU, and Task 31 (Conventional
Forestry Systems for Sustainable Production of Bioenergy)
of the IEA Bioenergy Agreement, and bilaterally at
project level.
A 52-page interim report of the programme, including the
list of projects, was published earlier in English as
Technology Programme Report 5/2003 of Tekes. An English
version of the final report will appear during the first
half of 2004.
