    Abstract

The goal of the project is to decrease the chipping costs and to improve forest chip quality by developing the chipping technology. The knife costs in forest residue chipping are about 0.15 /loose-m3. The main reason for high wear in knifes is stones and other impurities in logging residues. The good enough quality for power plant use is easy to achieve. Small problem is that the long sticks slip sporadically between drum and counter blade. The energy consumption in chipping hang on the sharpness of knifes and feeding angels. High speed video camera is a good instrument in finding what happens inside the chipper. A new experimental chipper at VTT Jyväskylä offers a good opportunity to study drumchipping in efficient way.
